The BBC responds to scandals with a script: “We learned lessons. We changed processes.”
That is why BBC Director-Generals so often leave under pressure. The BBC protects its image until outsiders force the truth into daylight, and the Director-General becomes the public price of “accountability.”
Their track record of abusing the public is horrendous.
The Diabolical BBC Director General Track Record
Sir Hugh Greene, Sir Charles Curran, Sir Ian Trethowan, Alasdair Milne, Sir Michael Checkland, Sir John Birt (1960s -1990s)
- All of these Director Generals oversaw BBC operations during the notorious and now deceased BBC presenter and child rapist, Jimmy Savile’s tenure.
- Birt was also Director General when Martin Bashir had evidence falsified to secure an interview with Princess Diana.
Greg Dyke (2000-2004)
- BBC journalist Andrew Gilligan reported (May 2003) that the UK government had “sexed up” the Iraq WMD dossier. The BBC’s source was revealed publicly to be Dr David Kelly, a government weapons expert.
- Weeks later, Dr Kelly committed suicide — the BBC has his blood on their hands for being so reckless in their journalism.
- Dyke resigned, stating, “I’ve sadly come to the conclusion that it will be hard to draw a line under this whole affair while I am still here. We need closure”.
Mark Thompson (2004 – 2012)
- Under Thompson’s leadership, the BBC flagship programme “Newsnight” (which was recently exposed for doctoring a speech by President Trump) chose not to air a shocking documentary about child rapist Jimmy Savile’s chronic abuse of children.
- Newsnight investigated Jimmy Savile in late 2011 but did not broadcast the item. Newsnight instead chose to air a celebration of his life, honouring the recently deceased Savile.
- The later Pollard Review described Newsnight’s 2011 Savile inquiry as “abortive” and said the failure to broadcast was a disastrous episode for the BBC.
George Entwistle (Sept – Nov 2012)
- Again, on Newsnight, a report about abuse in North Wales care homes, which led to Lord McAlpine being falsely identified as an abuser!
- This was not the first nor the last time this kind of gross, destructive, false accusatory “journalism” occurred.
- Entwistle resigned, stating he was “ultimately responsible for all content, and in the light of the unacceptable journalistic standards”.
Tony Hall (2013 – 2020)
- Under Tony Hall, the very BBC journalists who uncovered Jimmy Savile’s chronic abuse, like Meiron Jones, were dismissed.
- Repeating the egregious errors under Entwistle, the BBC falsely accused Sir Cliff Richard of sexual abuse.
- Sir Cliff sued the BBC for defamation, but it cost him millions, and the damage to his reputation and family had already been done by the BBC.
- The BBC’s decision to stop funding free TV licences for most over-75s became politically explosive and damaged public goodwill, especially among older viewers.1
Tim Davie (2020-2026)
- In 2023, former “Match of the Day” host Gary Lineker was temporarily suspended for his pro-Palestine comments on social media.
- He left the BBC after making an antisemitic post on social media.
- In 2024, chief news anchor Huw Edwards pleaded guilty to “indecent images” offences, which were the worst possible category of sexual images of children.
- In the prior year, Edwards had announced on BBC News at 10, the pseudo-documentary, “A Very British Cult”, which provably and evidentially, viciously deceived the public about Lighthouse Global.
- In 2025, Ofcom found the BBC had violated its own guidelines, broadcasting propaganda about Gaza in the name of a documentary — very similar to “A Very British Cult”, this time using the son of a Hamas leader to front its propaganda.
- Davie resigned along with the CEO of News, Deborah Turness, after the splicing of President Donald Trump’s speech in 2021.
- Davie told BBC staff that “overall the BBC is delivering well, but there have been some mistakes made, and as director general I have to take ultimate responsibility.”
Following the Jimmy Savile scandal, the BBC faced at least 36 allegations of sexual abuse involving children or teenagers against 20 current or former BBC employees, excluding Savile.2 A wider BBC disclosure recorded 152 recent and historic sexual abuse allegations against 81 BBC employees and freelancers, including 48 relating to Savile, involving both adults and children.3
There have been at least 11 known convictions of individuals who have sexually abused children directly and/or possessed horrific images of children.4
Holding Guilty Individuals At The BBC Accountable
Enough. This is not a “learning journey.” It is a long-running pattern of institutional self-protection—followed by performative contrition—followed by the next predictable collapse.
We are correcting the record: naming names, documenting outcomes, and refusing the sanitised language that turns reputational harm, whistleblower suppression, and public deception into “process issues.”
The BBC does not get to narrate itself back into innocence. The public record must be confronted as it is—without euphemism, without spin, and without the familiar institutional escape hatch of “mistakes were made.”
What “Fundamental Change” Would Require
“Fundamental change” is not another glossy memo.
It means consequences that are real, early, and visible—not sacrificial resignations at the very top once the damage is already done.
It means genuine whistleblowers are protected, and opportunists who weaponise allegations are confronted—because both cowardice and cynicism poison justice.
And yes, it costs reputation—because it requires the BBC to stop managing perception and start submitting to reality. Institutions built to preserve prestige will not do this voluntarily. They do it only when they are cornered.
Why Citizen BBC Verify And BBC Inner Eye Are Necessary
The BBC claims it “holds power to account” through units like Verify and Eye—yet it will not hold itself to the same standard.
So citizens must. Not because we enjoy conflict, but because the BBC’s refusal to correct itself leaves a vacuum—and that vacuum gets filled by harm.
Citizen BBC Verify exists to measure the gap between what the BBC claims to be and what it actually does.
BBC Inner Eye exists to look inward—applying to the BBC the same evidential standards it demands from everyone else.
This is about correcting the record, preserving evidence, demanding right of reply, and forcing consistency—because the BBC’s narrative power can destroy reputations, fracture families, and endanger children, while the institution shelters itself behind polite language and internal reviews.
Conclusion: The Need for Action
The new Director General, Matt Brittin, has recently stepped into the leadership role.
In due course, we will be writing to him to detail his responsibilities in light of his abhorrent predecessors.
We will be holding him personally accountable to correct the record.
The BBC changes procedures. It never changes the fundamental culture of self-righteousness.
One of many, many reasons why we are planning the launch of a class action lawsuit against the BBC to make sure the full and comprehensive record is corrected, as it is clear they are not currently willing to.

It’s a smoke screen. They’re using the removal of the tallest poppy, the head of the organisation, as action to suggest they’re solving the problem. Only internal change will. This is how sneaky they are, this public sacrifice gives the impression things are being dealt with, they are not. They’ll change a few surface level things, make a little adjustment, but the rotten core still remains. They do this season after season.
This has upset me for some time, but reading it here in black and white has helped me to bring things together to understand what I’m feeling more. The constant resignations when things get really hard is so illogical. You don’t leave the ship when it’s sinking. You stay and you fix it. You deal with the problems. But it’s not their decision as so called Director Generals. They’re puppets for their overlords. I’m not referring even to the board; above them. There are decisions made about the BBC to keep the rot at the core. The toxic, abusive culture is not only so dark and diabolical, but in the name of being impartial and objective is disgusting, immoral and an abuse of their position and the public who are forced to pay for them.
What a devastating account of the BBC’s history. So far, very few people have faced the level of accountability that such actions warrant. Through the BBC Class Action, that will change as more of us come together to hold accountable those who have been complicit in, or directly responsible for, these wrongdoings and who have seemingly escaped justice.
No more.
Thank you for writing this article. May we all stand with courage, strength, and conviction in our Lord.
This clearly shows that the BBC has a massive cultural problem and that the BBC is deeply involved in government decisions and public affairs. It is obvious that their current pattern of dealing with problems does not work. They remove one Director General after another and might change a few small areas inside the organisation, but ultimately nothing really changes and the abusive and toxic culture remains. That is why severe scandals have continued inside the BBC for decades.
This is a truly diabolical track record, and seeing the number of scandals during the period of Tim Davie shows that external organisations such as Citizen BBC Verify and BBC Inner Eye are crucial in helping to hold the BBC accountable. God bless.
My goodness, laid out collectively like this in one place, the BBC have got an astonishingly dark and insidious track record that is enough to make anyone see clearly, that this is an extremely untrustworthy, institutionally evil organisation, that have never made any meaningful change at its core, and this evidently goes back decades.
They sacrifice a General Director time after time whilst never addressing the cultural issue of unrepentant evil, corruption, depravity and toxicity, deeply embedded in the character of the BBC. They are not interested in solving the real problem but continue to cover up their glaring flaws just like they covered up the rampant sexual abuse of children and teenagers, for many, many years.
Reform is needed now but they would need to admit there is a problem first in order for reform to begin….with their current track record, this seems highly unlikely.
Wow. When it’s all listed and laid bare in a list like this, it really does show that these aren’t just a few bad apples but this is a systemic problem in the BBC, woven into their very fabric.
I hold out very little hope for Mr Brittin, and I will not believe true and lasting change has been made until the record has been corrected for good.
Thank you for making sure the record is absolutely clear and correct on the BBC’s horrendous history and it’s disgraceful Director Generals! Wow. What a rap sheet!
If the BBC were a private corporation and not state backed, state excused, and state enforced to remain in existence, it would no longer exist. Fact.
That’s why they have to forcibly fund it through a a licence fee and soon, likely to be a compulsory tax! They cannot run the BBC on commercial subscriptions because they know nobody would buy them and their budget would be miniscule. I personally cannot wait to see it and it’s smug, gaslighting horror show and moral and ethical blight on the media landscape gone.
The (so-called) leadership has changed but the culture has not. The abuses continue and the real issues are never truly addressed. Slowly, but surely, the public is coming to see the reality of who and what the BBC really are. I’m only seeing this because of our experience at Lighthouse. Were it not for the last 3-4 years responding to the BBC, I would’ve naively fallen for the appearance as an angel of light. Even without watching the BBC I had a positive perspective that I’d carried from childhood. Now it’s been decimated!
Thank you for this summary. Unfortunately it’s a painful walk down memory lane because it shows the extent of pain and destruction caused by the BBC. God bless Dr Kelly. I remember that situation but at the time I had no idea how endemic such devastation caused by the BBC actually was.
The BBC must change at its core, because the core is evidently rotten. You can change the figurehead as often as you like, but the systemic culture of self-righteousness needs to be rooted out if this organisation is to continue.
The BBC is way worse than what you’ve laid out and the Director generals have blood on their hands. The BBC should have been ripped apart and sold for parts after Savile. Here is just a small insight into their diabolical behaviour.
Duncan Bartlett – BBC Journalist and Correspondent: 35 counts of child sexual abuse, including paying for live streams of children being abused in the Philippines.
Victor Melleney – BBC Panorama Director and Question Time Panellist: Possession of 832 images of child sexual abuse. His trial was during COVID, and Judge Simon Bryan used that as an excuse to spare him any jail time.
Ben Thomas – BBC Wales Presenter and Reporter: 40 counts, including sexual activity with children, indecent assaults, and voyeurism against 33 victims.
Stuart Hall – BBC TV and Radio Presenter: Indecent assaults on 13 girls aged 9–17.
Rolf Harris – BBC Presenter: 12 counts of indecent assault on four girls aged 7–16.
Chris Denning – BBC Radio 1 DJ and Producer: Multiple child sexual abuse offences against boys aged 8–16.
Huw Edwards – BBC News Lead Presenter: Receiving and viewing indecent images of children.
Geoffrey Wheeler – BBC Presenter: Indecent assault on a female colleague.
Chris Langham – BBC Actor, star of The Thick of It: Possession of Level 5 (worst category) child abuse videos. The content was so vile that one of the jurors at his trial threw up.
Michael Souter – BBC Radio Presenter: 19 counts of sexual assaults on seven boys aged 11–16.
Tony Wadsworth – BBC Radio Presenter: Indecent assaults on underage boys and outraging the public.
Julie Wadsworth – BBC Radio Presenter: Indecent assaults on underage boys and outraging the public.
Mark Page – BBC Radio 1 Presenter: Arranging child sex offences via Skype (2016–2019), targeting children as young as 12 in the Philippines.
Peter Rowell – BBC Radio Presenter: 12 counts of indecent assault on five girls under 16, plus making and possessing indecent images.
Dave Lee Travis (birth name: David Griffin) – BBC Radio 1 DJ and Presenter: Indecent assault on a female researcher.
Niven Sinclair – BBC Chauffer: Sinclair was paid millions of pounds to run a chauffeur service for the BBC from the late 1970s until at least 2006. Sinclair is a convicted paedophile for a series of crimes, including raping a child at gunpoint.
Adam Britton – BBC Zoologist and Animal Expert: 56 charges relating to bestiality and animal cruelty of dozens of dogs in Australia. He also pled guilty to four counts of accessing child abuse material.
David Mundy – BBC sound engineer: Possession of over 58,000 indecent images of children, including 2,500 Category A (most extreme on the government’s ‘Sexual Offences Definitive Guideline’ used in categorisation and sentencing).
Jimmy Savile (Alleged Offences), the DPP never investigated during his lifetime – BBC Children’s Show Presenter:
214 recorded criminal acts, including 126 indecent assaults and 34 rapes/penetrations.
Sexual abuse of at least 589 victims (primarily female, aged 5–75; with roughly 80% of the victim pool comprising underage victims), including one known boy.
Grooming and assaults took place in BBC studios, schools, care homes and hospitals; allegations of necrophilia.
Did you see how nervous Brittin was when he came in for the first day. Wait until he finds out what has really been going on behind those walls.. perverted satans.. Well actually he is one of them, otherwise they would never have him in there.. So he probably knows already..
Beyond the most abhorrent track record, yet still the “most trusted news source”… WOW!
What a powerful article, thank you for bringing this all together as you have. For all the research that has been carried out to get the facts. Seeing it all brought together, the horrendous, maliciousness that has and does go on within the BBC, this all needs to be made known. The Jimmy Savile case was heinous by how much was covered up. What he did, what Hue Edwards and many others have done…the lives they have destroyed, but still the BBC protected them…I pray that Matt Brittin will receive your open letter once it has been written, and look at the changes that need to be made…
